What To Do When Disaster Hits

Fire Damage

If you've incurred property damage due to fire, the first thing to do after the fire department leaves is to contact your Insurance Agent. Reliable agents are accustomed to helping individuals and organizations that have suffered a loss. Be sure to keep a copy of your insurance policy in a safe place. Open windows to begin to air out the property. Limit movement within the damaged area to prevent spreading and embedding soot particles. Blow-off or vacuum loose soot and particles from upholstery, carpeting and drapes. Avoid using any upholstered furniture that has not been fully cleaned. Petroleum jelly can be used to clean and protect chrome trim on kitchen appliances. Wash soot off plants with water. Wash both sides of the leaves and remove the top 1/2" to 1" of soil. If the furnace is operational, change the furnace filter. Place cheesecloth over the air registers to filter out soot. If electricity is off, empty the refrigerator and freezer and prop the doors open to prevent mold. If the heat is off and temperatures are below freezing, antifreeze can be used in sinks, tubs, toilets, and drains to prevent pipes from freezing. You may want to turn the water off and drain the water lines as an added precaution. Drain the hot water heater if the electric or gas is shut off. Make sure that electric and gas service is shut off if structural damage has occurred. The property should be secured by boarding up any windows or other exterior openings that have been damaged. Do not use any electronic appliances until they have been checked and cleaned by professionals. Take pets to a safe environment until the clean up is completed. If you have fish tanks, be sure to change the water. A qualified cleaning and restoration company like Capstone Construction is ready to assist you through this process.

Water Damage

If you have incurred property damage due to water, the first thing to do is to contact your Insurance Agent. All insurance policies ask that the property owner show due diligence in keeping loss to a minimum, so you will want to make sure that the source of water saturation is stopped. Remove as much water as you can with wet vacuuming or mopping. Place all fragile and delicate items out of and off any furniture that is on wet carpet. Move furniture items to a dry area, if this in not possible, aluminum foil, natural wood, or heave plastic wrap should be placed under furniture to prevent further damage. Prop up or remove wet furniture cushions to allow them to dry. Paint cans, or other items water will not affect, can be placed under furniture or other items to keep them out of the way of standing water. Open cabinet and desk doors and drawers to air out these items. Move artwork and other home accessories to a dry place. In the summer, turn on the air-conditioning to aide in removing the moisture from the premises. In the winter you can open windows to allow the moisture to escape. Do NOT use any electronic appliances while standing in water. Do NOT use any electronic appliances or light fixtures that have water damage. Use only non-bleeding towels to soak up water. If drywall ceilings are drooping, poke small holes in the wall to release the water. Open any suitcases, boxed contents, musical cases, etc. that have water damage to allow them to air out. Weather permitting; these items may be placed in the sun to dry.   If you need assistance with any of these steps, contact the professionals at Capstone Construction and we will take the necessary measures to stop the water from causing additional harm. The team at Capstone Construction is ready to control future damage caused by mold, mildew, and corrosion with our dehumidifiers, fans, and other necessary equipment.

Wind Damage

If high winds have damaged your property, the first thing to do is to contact your Insurance Agent. The property should be secured by boarding up any windows or other exterior openings that have been damaged. Remove large pieces of glass. Vacuum glass particles from the floors, window ledges, carpets and upholstery.  If you need assistance, contact the professionals at Capstone Construction
